EazyWorks: Manufacturing Automation Glossary
Glossary of words you can encounter within Manufacturing Automation
The terms are explained from the perspective of the EZ-MES system.
Discrete vs. Non-Discrete
Discrete parts can only have a quantity of 1. Non discrete parts can have any quantity.
A non-discrete part can be used to define a Batch. Discrete parts can be grouped
by using a Lot.

ISA-95
Aka ANSI/ISA-95: International standard for developing an automated interface between
enterprise and control systems. www.isa-95.com
Lot
Same as a batch but know the batch consists of discrete parts that can be tracked
individually. So it is possible to assign Serial Numbers to each individual part
of the Lot. An example of a Lot: A Lot of Wafers, in the semiconductor industry
it is common to group wafers into lots, while each individual wafer still has its
own unique ID.
MES
Manufacturing Execution System: MES is a system or set of systems that manage the
end-to-end process in the plant - from order in to shipment out.
MPI
Manufacturing Processing Instruction
PCB
Printed Circuit Board
PVT
Production Verification Testing, Performance Verification Test, Production Validation
Test.
Serial Number
A Unique Identifier assigned to a produced good, lot or part. See 'Unique ID'
